University Palace in Bucharest during the student days of Dragomir Hurmuzescu
„At that time, in the University of Bucharest building, in addition to law schools, of (philosophy and) letters and sciences with chemistry laboratories (on the ground floor of prof. Alexe Marin and on the second floor on the left, of Bacaloglu), the following institutions were also crowded: at the entrance on the left, where most students enter, was down, immediately to the right, the entrance door with about three rooms. In the middle of the building was the main entrance, which led upstairs to the meeting room, with the roundabout of the country senate, and below was the mineral chemistry laboratory of prof. Alexe Marin, whom I mentioned before. Also in this part of the building was hosted the Romanian Geography Society, which held its meetings in the senate hall and then the Romanian Academy. Here, as a student, I heard a communication from prof. Bacaloglu, about the lightning bumper. The exposure was very clear, as well as all the lessons of this teacher, but it produced a great disappointment, according to our idea, willing, as we were, for seasonal news. I listened to a very simple and simplified lesson for everyone’s understanding, without any development or the prospect of higher generalization ”.

Student dormitories and canteens
11 february 1916, the University of Bucharest, through its Rector I. Athanasiu requests the intervention of the Minister of Instruction and Cults at the Capital City Hall in order to give up a land for the Student dormitory.
”The need to set up a Student dormitory near our University is increasingly felt and the events of recent years have shown us that this institution could bring considerable services not only students but also society. It will be able to procure smart and hardworking students, but poor, home and food and less expensive and at the same time will be a cultural environment, which will better prepare future citizens […].
The land (5000 s. m. approximately) on which the Student dormitory will be built, it is good not to be in the center of the City, but to have in its vicinity a large communication artery provided with trams. Such a land is located on the Dambovita Gorge, near the Electric Factory and belongs to the Capital City Hall, according to the information we have. It is next to the Botanical Garden, which is very useful, because there will be no need for a special park, absolutely necessary for an institution like this”.
”Due to the lack of its own place for Student dormitory and Canteen, the Society had to be divided into three sections, namely:
- Section for students of the Faculty of Medicine;
- Student Section in Letters and Philosophy;
- Student Department in Sciences, Law, Pharmacy and Theology.
The Society maintained about 450 internal students and about 800 external students in 4 student dormitories and 4 canteens, whose administration was under the leadership of Dr. N. Hamal, general manager of the society ”.
